Over 50 Blairgowrie members enjoyed the Sail Country regatta at Albury Wodonga Yacht Club over the long weekend. Although the highlight was the off-water activities with all families camping at the club and enjoying the relaxed country atmosphere with sailors from many other clubs. The pizza oven has now been upgraded with a flash outdoor kitchen setup, with a great local barista, to complement the wonderful lawn, gum trees and bean bags with stunning views across the lake. The lads from Parkdale entertained us on Sunday evening with their band, Black Flag and the Premature Starters, as the kids ran amuck and found new friends from other clubs.
The Minnows had a superb turnout with 28 boats from clubs including Portland, Sugarloaf, Parkdale, Rye, Gippsland Lakes, McCrae and Brighton. Coaches Paul Rogers and Keira Bates had the kids fully engaged, including and extra coaching session on Monday which was held in conjunction with the Victorian Sailing Team, led by head state coach Adrian Finglas.
Blairgowrie scored a trifecta in the Musto Skiffs with Wayne Bates winning from former World Champion Jon Newman and Paul Newman. While Tom Warner and Sam Backwell were first and second in the 28 boat Minnow fleet. Hamish Cowell won the Open BIC and Philippa Danks finished 2nd in her RS Aero5. Alister Danks (3rd), Paul Wilson and Jonathon Harding enjoyed the competition in the 10 boat Contender fleet which was won by world champion, Mark Bulka. In the 420 fleet, James Hackett finished 3rd, and it was great to see Ed Warner and Josh Bell, Jade Telford, Frank and Ned McKenna competing in their first regatta.
