What a weekend it was for the Minnow State Titles at Parkdale Yacht Club. There was a fantastic turn out; 22 juniors from Blairgowrie joined another 32 competitors from 9 other clubs including Portland, Gippsland, Beaumaris, Parkdale, McCrae, Brighton, Rye, Sandringham, and Sugarloaf.
On Saturday both Novice and Open fleets managed three races but halfway through the last race a front hit and the kids got to finish it in 20 knots. With the waves whipped up by the winds, many volunteers had to go into the breakers to lift the boats (and some kids) out to safety. We were greeted on Sunday with 15-20 knots and big seas as an extra challenge for the kids. Unfortunately, the Novice fleet couldn’t race in those conditions, but the Open fleet went out for three races. There were 10 and 11-year-old Open fleet sailors out in these very challenging that many adults on shore wouldn’t have ventured out in, we have some truly courageous young sailors in our Minnow fleet!

Showing the results of a strong program of junior sail training and club racing, Blairgowrie filled the top three positions for all three divisions of Open, Junior and Novice as well as top Female sailors in Open fleet.

In Open division, Sally Danks (BYS) in her final Minnow regatta sailed magnificently to get three bullets on the last day and so wrap up the Open fleet title (and first placed female). Sam Backwell (BYS), Hamish Cowell (BYS), Taj Duff (GLYC) and Tom Warner (BYS) rounded out the top 5. In the Junior Open fleet Lucas James (BYS) won the crown with a strong performance on the last day, with Angus McIntyre (BYS) and Archie OBrien (BYS) 2nd and 3rd. The top three females in Open fleet were Sally Danks (BYS), Cassie McCarthy (BYS) and Ruby Backwell (BYS).

With no racing on Sunday, the Novice fleet results stood as they were on Saturday; 1st Daniel Mizzi (BYS), 2nd Maja Fordyce (BYS), 3rd Raj Fordyce (BYS), 4th Cadel McColl (SBSC) and 5th Will Hailes (McCYC). Full results, please click here .

Further awards went to Archie O’Brien (Most Improved), Taj Duff (Sportsmanship/ President’s Award) and Will Hailes (Novice Encouragement award).

Congratulations to all the kids who took part, and a huge thanks to Parkdale Yacht club and all the volunteers for making the event so enjoyable and successful!
