Reasons to join BYS….

BYS is an accredited Discover Sailing centre that offers a variety of learn to sail courses for children and adults of every skill level.

Tackers is an introductory sailing program designed for children aged 7 to 12, focusing on making friends, having fun and learning about sailing. No prior experience is required, and all sailing equipment is provided.

Our junior and youth sail training program provides a pathway for beginner sailors to develop their skills and passion for the sport, while building lifelong friendships. This program encourages you to use your own boat, however there are club boats available for new sailors. The program runs on Sundays from October to February, with training three times a week in January.

Our adult sail training courses provide opportunities for adults of all skill levels to learn how to sail or enhance their sailing knowledge. We offer keelboat courses on our larger boats, dinghy training in two-person boats, female focused sailing opportunities as part of the club’s SheSails program, and the Sailability program in single and double-handed dinghies for people of all abilities.

At BYS, we hope to spread our love of sailing and give everyone the opportunity to fall in love with this sport we all enjoy so much.

Sailing for everyone

With a focus on giving our members as many opportunities to get out on the water as possible, we run keelboat racing all year round, and host off the beach racing from October to April for our adult and junior dinghy sailors.

Getting out on the water

We offer many ways for our members to get out on the water and join our BYS community. On top of the sailing courses we offer, we also have stand up paddle boards and windsurfers for our members to use, a constantly growing social swimming group, a strong volunteer program and a network to help new sailing members join keelboats as a casual or permanent crew member.

More than just sailing

The shared passion of sailing amongst all our members makes the BYS community strong on the water, but even stronger off the water. With a focus on family, friendship and sailing, we try to engage with our community to help build life-long friendships. Whether this is through exciting events for our juniors arranged by our Junior Club Captains, organised social events on the deck or casual family barbecues downstairs, there are so many ways to build relationships at BYS.

The stunning location

Sitting on the deck at BYS over summer, your breath will be taken away by the incredible coastal views. With plenty of lawn space to relax in the afternoon sun and keep an eye on the juniors as they sail, the location of BYS is second to none.

Fantastic facilities

Our facilities ensure that we meet the needs of all our members. For our sailors we have a state of the art marina and hardstand, 13 patrol boats to keep everyone safe while racing and training, a fleet of two-handed Pacers and two J70 sports boats, as well as change-rooms and showers for after sailing. For those enjoying the peace off the water, we have our bar and bistro which operates all year, the downstairs junior lounge which has plenty of games for children of all ages, and stair and lift access to our second floor.

Community spirit

The one thing that makes BYS so special is our strong community. Whether a family has been part of BYS for generations or have just joined, our community will welcome them and make them feel like BYS is their home away from home. No matter if you have just finished sailing in a race, are enjoying a meal in the bistro, or are attending one of our social events, you will always be met with a friendly face and great people to talk to.

Discover sailing

Discovering the magic of sailing and soaring along the water is something available to everyone, regardless of age or ability. We want to give everyone the opportunity to develop a passion for sailing, whether you are interested in racing, cruising, keelboats, dinghies, or just meeting new people. Sailing is a sport that is open to everyone at BYS, and we hope to see you out on our waters soon!

What category of membership is best for me?

There are several different categories, all with different criteria, some are sailing memberships, some are non-sailing.  However the best way to determine the right membership for you that will suit your lifestyle is to call Michelle de Blaquiere, our Membership Services Officer, on 5925 9602 to discuss what will suit you best.

How do I become a member at BYS?

The first thing is to determine the category of membership that best suits you or your family.  Once you have established this, please complete the membership application form that can be found at the top of this page, and return to Michelle de Blaquiere either in person or via email – [email protected].  Once we have received your completed application form, you will be formally notified via email of the acceptance of your application and the next steps.  Please note that at some stage you will need to attend an informal new member induction before your membership can be approved and admitted.

What if I don’t have a Proposer or Seconder for my application?

If you don’t know any Senior members at the club who can act as your Proposer and Seconder, then two members of the Executive Committee will be able to put their names down for you once you have been to your new member induction and they have met you in person.

How much does it cost to become a member?

The cost varies depending on the category of membership you apply for.  Note there is a one off Entrance Fee payable for all new members, together with an ongoing annual fee. See attached fees and subscriptions list at the top of this page.

When does the membership year run from/to?

The membership year commences on 1 May each year and goes through to 30 April.  Note that yearly subscription renewal invoices are sent out on, or near, 1 May each year.  You can join BYS as a new member at any stage of the year, however, the annual fees will still be billed for the full yearly period if you join between May – January, if joining after January – April then the annual fees will be pro-rated.
