Our Junior Sail Training program at BYS is designed to provide a safe and enjoyable introduction to dinghy sailing for all children. Junior Sail Training at BYS follows the Australian Sailing ‘Start Sailing’ program that runs through the summer sailing season. Junior Sail Training is a program for Members and Non-Members.

When is Junior Sail Training?

The 2020-21 Junior Sail Training Sailing course dates are 27th December 2020 – 21st March 2021. Junior sessions will run from 09:00 – 12:00.  On the Summer Holidays sessions are Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and during school term/s sessions are on a Sunday.

 

Course Syllabus

These levels of the Junior Sail Training program are designed to provide a safe and enjoyable introduction to dinghy sailing for complete beginners. The course includes an introduction to fundamental boat-handling skills and essential safety knowledge.

This level of the Junior Sail Training program is designed to equip the sailor with enhanced skills and awareness of the surrounding environment. It builds on the skills and knowledge gained in the Start Sailing course and will enable you to manoeuvre the boat efficiently in light to moderate conditions on all points of sailing.

The aim of this level is to introduce dinghy sailors to competitive sailing. The course focuses on refining enhanced boat-handling skills including speed control and manoeuvres. Introducing basic racing tactics and strategies.

Junior Sail Training Fees

27th December 2020 – 21 March 2021
First child – $400 incl GST*
Second child – $380 incl GST*
Third child – $360 incl GST*
NON BYS member – $550 inc GST*

What do I get for my fees?
Weekly training with qualified coaches following the Discover Sailing Syllabus. At the conclusion of each level students will receive a certificate as well as information regarding further courses and club programs. Instructors will be available to discuss sailing pathways and general advice for those looking to continue their sailing experience.
 
 

Do I need my own boat?

We recommend that you look at getting your own boat if your child shows an interest in sailing. The current dinghies we have in the program are Optimists & Minnows. However, subject to availability, we may have a few Ozi Optis that are available until December.

Being a recognised Discover Sailing Centre means that we adhere to Yachting Australia standards to ensure participant safety, fulfil our duty of care obligations, receive support from Australian Sailing and national promotion of our programs, have access to qualified instructors and fulfil our community and member expectations.
