Adult Discover & Learn Sailing

Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron is a family-orientated club and an Australian Sailing accredited Discover Sailing Centre that offers courses and opportunities for all skill levels, from beginners to experienced sailors. The club actively encourages participation and is committed to passing on the skills needed to sail a boat as well as the sportsmanship that goes with it.

The following opportunities are available:

Adult Learn to Sail (Dinghy) Off the Beach

Dinghies are small sailing boats and a great way to get into sailing. Sailing a dinghy can be fun and exhilarating. The Dinghy program has two start sailing levels and has been developed to provide a safe introduction to dinghy sailing.

In the Adult Learn to Sail – Dinghy Course level 1; you will learn the fundamental skills of sailing and are introduced to the fun of dingy sailing in a safe and supportive environment while covering the basic equipment, sailing terminology, boat launching, recovery, and capsizing recovery in shallow water, as well as basic sailing rules and theory. After Dinghy Course level 1 is completed, expand your sailing knowledge with Dinghy Course level 2!

In the Adult Learn to Sail – Dinghy Course level 2; you will build on your knowledge and confidence by learning to rig the boat unassisted, tie a number of knots, perform recovery in deep water and overboard recovery and identify and apply the basic rules of sailing while sailing. You will put all the knowledge and skills gained to sail a triangular course!

Adult Learn to Sail – Keelboat Start Crewing:

Keelboat Start Crewing is the first step on the Keelboat Sailing Pathway that introduces you to the basics of sailing on a small keelboat. The course includes boat handing, safety and sailing theory by covering basic sailing terminology and rules, basic knots, tacking and gybing and man overboard recovery.

Adult Learn to Sail – Keelboat Start Skippering:

Keelboat Start Skippering is the next step in your Keelboat Pathway, this course continues to develop both your theory and practical skills to allow you to confidently take control of the helm. You will further advance your sailing skills and safety knowledge to enable you to skipper unsupervised in sheltered waters. In the Keelboat Start Skippering course you will cover preparation of the boat, helm and trim on all points of sail, recover of man overboard whilst at the helm, assessing the risks on board, actions to take in an emergency, sailing backwards, mooring, interpreting weather and environmental conditions.

Try sailing for the first time.

Discover Sailing for Adults is an opportunity to experience sailing at BYS. You are welcome to join us at any time during this sailing introduction; join us for half an hour or stay for the 2 hour introduction. You do not require any sailing experience. Afterwards you can enjoy the great social environment of the club. At the end of your introduction you will have been introduced to sailing at BYS and provided information on opportunities and activities available at BYS to enable you to continue your participation in sailing.

BYS will provide all equipment and qualified Australian Sailing Instructors will be sailing with you.
Come dressed for the weather, in comfortable clothing and closed toe shoes.

This course is designed to advance your sailing skills and safety knowledge to enable you to sail unsupervised in sheltered waters.

Duration: 12 hours

Outcome: This course really builds on the lessons learnt in Start Crewing and Helming and teaches the participant true sailing skills such as sailing without the use of a rudder, sailing on and off anchor, and starts to touch on very basic navigation.

Prerequisites: Start Crewing course

Who should do this course: Anyone wishing to take charge of a small boat for a short sail in familiar sheltered waters

This course is designed to provide an introduction to the basics of sailing on a two-handed dinghy, including boat handling, safety, and sailing theory.

Your Discover Sailing journey starts here as you learn the fundamental skills of sailing and are introduced to the fun of dinghy sailing in a safe and supportive environment. Areas covered during the course include: basic clothing and equipment selection, sailing terminology, boat launch and recovery, capsize recovery in shallow water, rigging of the boat, capsize recovery in deeper water, sail a triangular course, basic sailing rules and theory.

Duration: 12 hours

Outcome: An introduction to sailing and boat handling, safety and sailing theory. You will receive your Start Sailing 1 certification at the completion of this course.

Prerequisites: Water-confident

Who should do this course: Anyone adult wanting to learn the basic fundamentals of sailing.

Cost: $350
