Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron is a family-orientated club and an accredited Discover Sailing Centre that offers courses and opportunities for all skill levels, from beginners to the experienced sailor. The club actively encourages participation and is committed to passing on the skills needed to sail a boat as well as the sportsmanship that goes with it.

Try sailing for the first time.
Discover Sailing for Adults is an opportunity to experience sailing at BYS. You are welcome to join us at any time during this sailing introduction; join us for half an hour or stay for the 2 hour introduction. You do not require any sailing experience. Afterwards you can enjoy the great social environment of the club. At the end of your introduction you will have been introduced to sailing at BYS and provided information on opportunities and activities available at BYS to enable you to continue your participation in sailing.
BYS will provide all equipment and qualified Australian Sailing Instructors will be sailing with you.
Come dressed for the weather, in comfortable clothing and closed toe shoes.

An introduction to the basics of sailing on a small boat, including boat handling, safety and sailing theory.
Duration: 9 hours
Outcome: An introduction to sailing and boat handling, safety and sailing theory
Prerequisites: Water-confident
Who should do this course: Anyone wanting to learn the basic fundamentals of sailing without getting wet!

This course is designed to improve your sailing skills by building on your practical and theory knowledge.
Duration: 12 hours
Outcome: Intermediate level boat-handling, sailing and safety theory.
Prerequisites: It is assumed that you have some sailing experience and more than likely will have done either Start Crewing or another sailing course previously.
Who should do this course: Those wishing to further develop their sailing skills
The Start Racing course is perfect for individuals who have a reasonable understanding
of sailing and would like learn or fine tune their racing skills.
Take your sailing to a new level
At the end of this course you will have an understanding of:
- Race structure
- Racing rules
- Advanced sail trim
- Boat equipment
- Balance

This course is designed to advance your sailing skills and safety knowledge to enable you to sail unsupervised in sheltered waters.
Duration: 12 hours
Outcome: This course really builds on the lessons learnt in Start Crewing and Helming and teaches the participant true sailing skills such as sailing without the use of a rudder, sailing on and off anchor, and starts to touch on very basic navigation.
Prerequisites: Start Helming course
Who should do this course: Anyone wishing to take charge of a small boat for a short sail in familiar sheltered waters

This course is designed to provide an introduction to the basics of sailing on a two-handed dinghy, including boat handling, safety, and sailing theory.
Your Discover Sailing journey starts here as you learn the fundamental skills of sailing and are introduced to the fun of dinghy sailing in a safe and supportive environment. Areas covered during the course include: basic clothing and equipment selection, sailing terminology, boat launch and recovery, capsize recovery in shallow water, rigging of the boat, capsize recovery in deeper water, sail a triangular course, basic sailing rules and theory.
Duration: 12 hours
Outcome: An introduction to sailing and boat handling, safety and sailing theory. You will receive your Start Sailing 1 certification at the completion of this course.
Prerequisites: Water-confident
Who should do this course: Anyone adult wanting to learn the basic fundamentals of sailing.
